SPC Flooring vs. Other PVC Flooring: A Comprehensive Comparison of Advantages and Disadvantages
In recent years, PVC-based flooring has dominated the global residential and commercial flooring market due to its affordability, water resistance, and versatility. Within the PVC flooring family, SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring stands out as a premium rigid-core option, while traditional PVC flooring includes flexible vinyl sheets, vinyl planks (LVP), vinyl tiles, and commercial homogeneous/heterogeneous vinyl flooring.
Although SPC belongs to the broader PVC category, its structural composition, performance, durability, and application scenarios differ significantly from other PVC flooring products. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of SPC flooring compared with other PVC flooring helps consumers, designers, and contractors make scientific and practical flooring choices. This article analyzes the core differences between SPC flooring and other PVC flooring from multiple dimensions, including structure, stability, durability, comfort, installation, environmental performance, cost, and applicable scenarios.

Basic Structural Differences
The fundamental distinction between SPC flooring and other PVC flooring lies in the core layer and rigidity. Traditional PVC flooring is mostly flexible or semi-rigid, relying on soft PVC resin as the main raw material, with thin or no supporting layer. SPC flooring adopts a multi-layer composite structure with a high-density rigid stone-plastic core, which is usually composed of limestone powder, PVC resin, and stabilizers. Its standard structure includes a wear layer, a printed decorative layer, a rigid SPC core layer, and a balanced base layer. This rigid structure fundamentally changes the physical properties of PVC flooring.
Other PVC flooring, such as flexible vinyl sheet flooring and standard LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) without a rigid core, have a soft and elastic texture. Their core layers are mostly made of foam or soft PVC, resulting in poor dimensional stability. Homogeneous PVC flooring commonly used in commercial places has a single-layer structure, with color and raw materials integrated, but it is still flexible overall. Heterogeneous PVC flooring has a multi-layer design but lacks a high-hardness structural layer. The structural difference determines the performance gap between SPC and other PVC flooring in all aspects.
Dimensional Stability and Deformation Resistance
SPC flooring has absolute advantages in dimensional stability, which is its most prominent advantage over other PVC flooring. The rigid stone powder core makes SPC flooring extremely stable when facing temperature and humidity changes. It does not expand with heat and contract with cold easily, does not arch, shrink, or deform, and can maintain long-term flatness even in humid environments such as basements, kitchens, and bathrooms.
Traditional flexible PVC flooring is greatly affected by temperature. High temperature may cause softening and warping, while low temperature may lead to hardening and cracking. Foam-core LVP is prone to indentation and permanent deformation under long-term pressure.
In commercial environments with large temperature differences or areas directly exposed to sunlight, SPC flooring maintains excellent flatness, while ordinary PVC flooring may show edge warping or surface unevenness after long-term use. For large-area paving, SPC flooring has stronger overall stability and does not require frequent reserved expansion gaps, which is also a major advantage in construction.
Wear Resistance, Scratch Resistance and Compression Resistance
Wear resistance is a key indicator for evaluating flooring life. SPC flooring is usually equipped with a transparent wear layer of 0.3mm or above, and some commercial-grade products reach 0.5mm or higher, with excellent scratch resistance and compression resistance. Its rigid substrate makes it less likely to dent under heavy object pressure, and it has strong resistance to daily friction, furniture movement, and shoe heel pressure.
Other PVC flooring has obvious differences in wear resistance. Commercial homogeneous PVC flooring has good wear resistance, but its cost is high; household flexible vinyl flooring has a thin wear layer, weak scratch resistance, and is prone to scratches, wear marks, and fading. Ordinary LVP has moderate wear resistance, but its soft substrate is easy to form permanent indentations under heavy objects, such as the bottom of tables, chairs, and sofas. For families with pets or high-traffic commercial places, SPC flooring is more durable than other PVC flooring.
Water Resistance and Moisture Resistance
All PVC flooring has certain water resistance, but SPC flooring is 100% completely waterproof, which is better than most other PVC flooring. Its rigid stone-plastic core does not absorb water at all, and the closed structure ensures that moisture cannot penetrate. Even if it is soaked in water for a long time, it will not expand, mold, or rot. This characteristic makes SPC flooring widely used in humid spaces.
Although traditional flexible PVC flooring is waterproof, its edge and bottom layers are easy to warp or peel off after long-term contact with water. Some foam-core vinyl flooring has poor airtightness, and moisture may penetrate into the core layer, leading to softening, deformation, or bacterial growth. In terms of moisture resistance in kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, and basements, SPC flooring is more reliable and safer than other PVC flooring.
Foot Feel, Sound Insulation and Comfort
The biggest disadvantage of SPC flooring is its hard texture and poor foot feel, while other PVC flooring has obvious advantages in comfort. Flexible vinyl sheets, foam-core LVP, and commercial elastic PVC flooring have soft, elastic, and quiet foot feel, with good sound absorption and shock absorption. Walking on it is lighter, and the impact sound is small, making it suitable for places requiring comfort and silence.
SPC flooring is hard and cold, with poor elasticity, and the walking sound is slightly louder. Although manufacturers add silent pads or base layers to improve comfort, it still cannot compare with flexible PVC flooring. For bedrooms, children’s rooms, or elderly rooms pursuing soft foot feel, other PVC flooring may be more appropriate; SPC flooring is more suitable for users who prioritize durability and stability.
Installation Method and Construction Difficulty
SPC flooring adopts a click-lock installation system, which is fast, convenient, and glue-free. It can be directly paved on the original ground, with low requirements for the base layer, and has the characteristics of immediate use after paving. Its rigid structure is not easy to bend during construction, with high paving efficiency and flat effect.
Traditional flexible PVC flooring is more complicated in construction. Vinyl sheets need glue bonding, with high requirements for base layer flatness, and it is prone to bubbles and warping; LVP without a locking structure also needs adhesive construction, which is long in cycle and high in labor cost. Although commercial PVC flooring can be constructed in large areas, the professional requirements are high. In terms of installation convenience and later maintenance, SPC flooring is significantly better than other PVC flooring.
Environmental Protection, Formaldehyde and Odor
High-quality SPC flooring uses environmentally friendly stabilizers and formulas, does not contain formaldehyde, benzene, and other harmful substances, has low odor, and is friendly to pregnant women, infants, and allergic people. Its raw materials are mostly non-toxic PVC and stone powder, with high safety and meeting strict environmental protection standards.
The environmental performance of other PVC flooring varies greatly. Some low-cost flexible vinyl flooring may use inferior plasticizers and adhesives, with peculiar smell and possible volatile organic compounds. Although high-standard commercial PVC flooring is environmentally friendly, the overall average environmental performance of the category is not as stable as SPC flooring. In household environments pursuing high environmental protection, SPC flooring is more reassuring.
Price and Cost Performance
SPC flooring is a mid-to-high-end product in the PVC flooring family, with a price higher than ordinary flexible vinyl sheets and part of LVP, but lower than solid wood flooring, engineered wood flooring, and high-end commercial homogeneous PVC flooring. Its cost performance is reflected in long service life, low maintenance cost, and no need for replacement for many years.
Other PVC flooring has a wider price range. Low-cost vinyl sheets are cheap, suitable for temporary or rental housing decoration, but short in service life and high in later replacement cost. High-quality commercial PVC flooring is expensive, with a price close to or even higher than SPC flooring, but its application scenarios are relatively single. For users pursuing balance of durability and cost, SPC flooring has higher cost performance.
Application Scenarios
SPC flooring is suitable for almost all indoor environments, including households, offices, shopping malls, schools, hospitals, shops, basements, kitchens, bathrooms, etc. It is especially excellent in high-traffic, humid, and high-temperature difference environments.
Other PVC flooring has more targeted applications. Flexible vinyl sheets are mostly used in rental houses, temporary projects, or low-cost renovations; commercial homogeneous PVC flooring is dedicated to hospitals, schools, factories and other places requiring wear resistance and antibacterial properties; LVP is more used in light-traffic household environments. SPC flooring has wider adaptability, while other PVC flooring is more professional in subdivided fields.
SPC flooring and other PVC flooring have their own advantages and positioning. SPC flooring represents the high-performance, rigid, durable route of PVC flooring, with outstanding stability, water resistance, and wear resistance, suitable for most household and commercial users pursuing long-term use and low maintenance. Other PVC flooring focuses on comfort, softness, and low-cost advantages, suitable for specific scenes requiring foot feel or temporary decoration.
With the upgrading of consumption, SPC flooring has become the mainstream choice in the PVC flooring market due to its comprehensive performance. However, in scenes pursuing comfort and quietness, flexible PVC flooring still has irreplaceable value. When choosing flooring, users should combine their own needs for environment, traffic volume, budget, and comfort, and select the most suitable product to achieve the best decoration and use effect.
