How Many Square Metres Fit in a Container? SPC Flooring Loading Guide & Freight Cost per m²
The Short Answer First
Many SPC flooring buyers ask the same question: why can one supplier load more square metres into a container than another? The answer is usually not the supplier’s loading ability, but the difference between weight limits, product density, and packaging efficiency.A 20-foot container typically holds 1,800–2,200 m² of SPC flooring, while a 40-foot container loads around 3,600–4,400 m². The exact quantity depends on two factors: container payload capacity and loading efficiency. For most 5 mm+ SPC flooring, weight is the limiting factor; for lightweight ABA flooring, volume efficiency becomes more important.Understanding this calculation helps distributors estimate freight cost per m² and optimize their landed cost before placing an order.
Weight Limit

A container has a maximum cargo weight: roughly 28,000 kg for a 20ft container and around 26,000–28,000 kg depending on carrier restrictions and local transport regulations.SPC flooring is a dense product. A typical 5 mm SPC floor weighs around 14–16 kg/m², which means thicker SPC products often reach the weight limit before the container is physically full. For example, an 8 mm SPC flooring shipment may reach the payload limit of a 40ft container while leaving unused space above the pallets
Volume Limit
Container capacity is also affected by cubic space:20ft container: approximately 33 m³40ft container: approximately 68 m³40ft high cube container: approximately 76 m³However, actual loading capacity depends on carton dimensions, pallet structure, plank size, and loading method.
Practical Loading Rule

The general rule is simple:Thick SPC is usually weight-limited, while thin SPC and lightweight ABA flooring are more volume-limited.A 20ft container typically loads around 1,800–2,200 m² of 4–6 mm SPC flooring, while a 40ft container loads approximately 3,600–4,400 m². A 40ft high cube can reach around 4,000–4,800 m², depending on product specifications and packaging efficiency. This is why professional flooring suppliers should provide a detailed loading plan including carton weight, dimensions, pallet configuration, and estimated loading quantity.
How to Calculate SPC Flooring Container Loading Capacity

Step 1: The Weight Check
Max m² by weight = payload ÷ weight per m². For 5 mm SPC at 15 kg/m² in a 20ft, that is about 1,866 m². Apply a 3–5% safety margin for packaging.
Step 2: The Volume Check
Max m² by volume = usable m³ ÷ volume per m² of the packed carton. A carton covering 2.2 m² in roughly 0.035 m³ gives about 2,000 m² per 20ft.
Step 3: The Binding Constraint Wins
Use the lower of the two results. For most 5 mm+ SPC, weight wins. For thin boards and ABA, volume wins.Always ask for the weight per m² of the exact SKU. If a supplier cannot state it, that is a quality signal in itself.
